Intelligence as it is defined in present day society

How would you define the word "smart"? Many people believe that your intelligence is determined by your ability to grasp concepts quickly and put them to use in the form of facts and formulas. Others assume it to be based upon your reasoning and/or logical capability. I personally conceive this word to be defined as one who has the potential to think beyond the walls of perception. Analyze the first definition by thinking about the world we live in. Just knowing that your knowledge of these "facts and formulas" is what determines your life, in my opinion is completely ridiculous. I attend one of the most competitive high schools in California. Everyday, I am constantly hearing people conversing non-stop about their current academic state, saying things such as "oh my gosh, I have an A- in AP bio, i'm so dead" or "When I'm in college, I want to study engineering or math because that's what everybody else wants to do". At first, it didn't seem to bother me much, because how could you blame them for stressing about something that is considered such a big deal in our society? However after starting my sophomore year, I started to see things from a different perspective, and I realized that it's not entirely their fault, since it has a lot to do with their background. Meaning, that their mind has been conditioned and trained to think in such a way. Growing up, my parents never pressurized me much until I got to about 7th grade. That was mainly because they wanted me to attend a private high school, since I spent my whole life in private school, and due to that, my 7th grade GPA had to be quite high. Their minds changed after opinions from several people, and they later decided to send me to public school. But anyhow, their behavior continued to stay the same after this stage and they tried to exert even more pressure on me as I got to high school. As they were experiencing having a child attending high school in the U.S., they realized how much of a burden it was. They started to regret not working with me at an early age, so they wanted to do so to my younger brother. And thinking about this, I can never imagine my brother to have a single clue about what is going on in the world when he's older. His mind is capacitated  with the idea of having a 4.0 GPA and getting into a good college. I can already predict that he is never going to stop and think of his purpose for doing all this. I came to the conclusion, that after looking at him, I am incredibly thankful my parents never tried to put such stress upon me when I was his age. Moreover, consider the second definition. It seems to me to be a bit more analytical, but it is still incorrect in my opinion. Being able to reason clearly is not important unless you are easily able to view the world as a whole. Sure, common sense is a necessity, but having it doesn't show you are better than others. People who have good reasoning are usually the ones who win most arguments, which usually causes them to think of themselves higher than other people. Trying to prove someone wrong by your reasoning does not portray you as being smart, it just makes you appear sanctimonious. And there is absolutely no other quality worse than being someone who patronizes you for your lack of just pure common sense, because people who usually don't have much of it are the deepest thinkers in my opinion. This brings me to the third definition, which is what I believe is the most accurate, "one who has the potential to think beyond the walls of perception". There are not many people in this world who can fit this description. And to be able to do so, is beyond amazing. This definition simply describes someone who is easily able to view the world as a whole. Someone who has depth, and does not try to solidify who they are to the world. Someone who is capable of completing actions from their own perspective, and does not let others fight their battles for them. Someone who realizes that strong people do not put others down, they lift them up. Someone who takes the time to put into consideration the flaws of society and understand how it constantly wages a war on the human mind. And finally, someone who has potential to make a difference, either it being in their life's or someone else's, and most of the time doesn't realize it themself. So think about it, do you really want a world full of lifeless people who are nothing but quotidian human beings with no purpose but to put others down? Take this into consideration, before determining your own definition of what we call "smart".
